about

When we were young we:

[We] went to war with shadows
And smoke signaled our retreat
We held our heads in winter hats
And snowshoes on our feet

We hid in order to find a freer expression of ourselves, away from parents, and teachers, and bullies, and popular culture. We found refuge in substance, each other, and solitude.

Clinging to a feature
Unless features do deform us
Seeking something to dig up
It was so enormous

But it was all that we knew…

We retreated to deprogram because we knew something wasn’t right. The story that was written for us was not the story we wanted to live, and we wanted to write it on our own and with each other. This was a daunting task, but it was a war worth fighting. The only war we felt worth fighting. A never ending war.

One by our secrets laughed in our sallow faces
Never looking so concerned, nor stopping to replace us
But the call it never stopped we just started listening
To the muted echo of a temporal awakening

As we got older we forgot about honesty, and started lieing, but only to ourselves, and so, the war continued, and we soldiered on.

A fall, something new
Through it all, we grew
Behind stars, and closed doors
Hide at all costs

Our retreat became our disguise, our bravery our crutch, our solitude was hiding, our foxhole held our regret. What did we find of ourselves, and what were we left with?

A ghostly image forms
In the spaces that replaced us
Spinning little leaves
Like an unknown galaxy

Becoming who we never wanted to be, the enemy, is the ultimate result of war, of all wars. Dropping bombs and killing the innocent, inheriting the narrative that was written for us destroyed us, and so, we destroyed ourselves. All that is left is hope, a fallow promise for the privileged. A new language dead upon arrival.

But our memories will fill dictionaries with dead languages
Futures tongue’s creations most likely an imitation
Of a song that we knew
Wishing something would come true

A wish cried into a night sky, upon a star, the only one we know, the creator, indifferent to our cries, burning us alive and giving us the only life we know.

Behind stars and closed doors
Hide at all costs

A hope for a new world beyond definition and comprehension.

From the fall to the stoop
