Love songs have a tradition of Victorian masculinity and purity, owned by the privilege of white men. Men court women for ownership, and not partnership, and the key ingredient missing from many of the love songs that we sing and love and share is vulnerability. Love is an invitation to be destroyed by the one you give your love to. They see through you, they see in you, they write your shadow because they share your shadow. To be a man and to be vulnerable is to be weak, and to be a man and to be weak is an unforgivable betrayal of our gender role. I defy this notion, and I am not holding back. The heart is my sun’s receptor.
